puzzles for benefits of puzzle in early childhood development

Benefits Of Puzzles In Early Childhood Development

There are many benefits of puzzles in early childhood development. So I am lucky to work in a preschool that is well resourced with a large variety of puzzles catering to many different levels of interest and abilities. The teachers regularly change and rotate them. By doing this, the children are constantly exposed to a wide selection of puzzles and there’s little chance they will grow bored with the same ones. If a child is particularly keen on puzzles and they love the challenge of a harder one, we are always more than happy to oblige. This year we have one little boy who just loves doing puzzles. He cannot seem to get enough of them! He has amazing persistence and loves a challenge. Once he has mastered all the ones available in the classroom, he will ask for another harder one. He smiles from ear to ear and his face just lights up whenever he receives an increasingly more difficult puzzle!! Some children struggle with completing puzzles and may generally not be interested in them. We try and motivate these children by providing puzzles that have popular culture pictures on them. We have puzzles with PJ masks, Bluey, The wiggles, etc. You name it we’ve got it, anything to motivate the children’s interest in doing puzzles! Puzzles provide children with so many learning opportunities. They are an excellent learning tool that helps children’s development. Puzzles are great for improving children’s cognitive skills, hand-eye coordination as well as patience, perseverance, and language. Benefits of Puzzles In Early Childhood Development Cognitive Skills Puzzles give children the opportunity to develop important strategies which help them understand how pieces go together to form a whole. Children can observe and manipulate the puzzle pieces to see how they fit together to make a complete picture. Puzzles help children’s brains to develop, improve problem-solving skills and attention spans. The reason for this is because children who are engaged in doing a puzzle are using their brains’ logical and creative sides. They are exercising their brains! Children also develop skills such as shape recognition, persistence, and concentration. All of these skills are so important for school readiness. Fine Motor Skills Children give their fingers a great workout when they do puzzles. Children will grasp and manipulate the puzzle pieces or use a pinching motion to pick up puzzle pieces with knobs. All these precise movements will benefit their fine motor development which is so important for their ability to learn to use a pencil properly and write. Hand-eye coordination Puzzles help improve children’s hand-eye coordination. The reason for this is because their eyes are seeing the puzzle piece and their brains are working out where this piece should fit. Children are having their eyes, hands, and brains all working together to fit that puzzle piece into the correct position. Self Esteem When children persist and complete a puzzle this demonstrates to them that they are able to overcome challenges and deal with their frustrations. The joy that comes with finishing a task will give them a sense of accomplishment. This important achievement will help their self-esteem to flourish Opportunity To Discover New Things About The World Puzzles come with many pictures that cover a wide variety of subjects. You can find puzzles that have world maps, animals, food, body parts, plants, people from diverse backgrounds. All of these pictures provide opportunities to learn about the world they live in. Language Development When children finish a puzzle there is a perfect opportunity to talk about what they can see in the image they have just put together. You can talk to them about things like colours, quantities, and they can also describe what they see. All of these conversations will build their vocabulary and general knowledge. We have some Unicorn loving children at preschool and this puzzle is a huge favourite! It has attracted and motivated many children to gravitate towards the puzzle table. These knob puzzles are great for children who are first beginning to do puzzles as they are simpler. They are also perfect for fine motor development. Learning shape recognition with this maths puzzle. Not as easy as it might first look! This multi-layer puzzle is NOT for the faint-hearted. It requires a lot of persistence and good concentration both for the children and us preschool educators Ha! See the different pictures on the puzzles. Perfect opportunity to talk about face parts and emotions. We also have a big variety of dinosaur puzzles and they are always very popular. Puzzles also give children the perfect opportunity to work together and learn the value of working as a team. At preschool, we have puzzles with letters. Fantastic for learning letter recognition and words! Puzzles come with many different edges, not just corners. Again, another great way to challenge thinking and strategy. Puzzles are not only fun they are also a key learning tool for children and provide many benefits in Early Childhood Development. cup for a fun family weekend

A Fun Family Weekend!

It was a fun family weekend at home. We all feel like we will be in lockdown for a very long time. But thankfully the weather this weekend has been absolutely beautiful!! and it has lifted everyone’s spirits up. It’s been absolutely glorious blue skies and sunshine making it feel just like spring. I’m a bit worried I’ll get used to the warm weather and then Bam!! the cold will come back! A Fun Family Weekend with lots of sunshine! Warm sunny days like these mean I have been sunning myself on the verandah a whole lot! The sun just invigorates me completely. Every day I go outside to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. I really like seeing our neighbours outside enjoying the sun too. Lately, we have been having great but very socially distanced conversations with them. The funny thing is that we have all been neighbours for a very long time. I have seen their kids all growing up and they have seen ours. But I don’t think we have ever had so many long chats with them as everyone is always so busy doing life. Ha! lockdown has its bright side I guess! Friday I had the day off from work on Friday and I concentrated on getting most of my household chores over and done with before the weekend. Later, in the evening I cooked a delicious roast beef with veggies and my family enjoyed the tender and juicy beef. So it was definitely a thumbs up from everybody! Unfortunately, I am absolutely hopeless about keeping hydrated and am sadly very inconsistent with my water intake. Only once I start feeling headaches do I realize that it must be because I haven’t been drinking nearly enough. Saturday morning I pulled out this lovely cup my very special little preschool friend gifted me a couple of years ago. I am trying to motivate myself to drink more and I’m hoping that this cup and straw will do the trick! Saturday In the afternoon I tried a new recipe for orange cake and I am happy to say that it turned out moist and delicious! So stay tuned for the recipe. Around the same time, my friend messaged me to say she was making my Apple and Berry gluten-free loaf and I was happy to hear that it was a big hit with her and her family. My friend and I have started calling each other ‘The Wonder Twins’, from the old 1970’s cartoon. We often say the same thing at the same time or are thinking the same thing. Now we are baking at similar times!! I was craving a latte and luckily I had these Moconna sachets. Have you tried these? I really recommend them because the coffee is so delicious and creamy. Before lockdown, I would sometimes enjoy going out for coffee but now this is no longer possible so I am enjoying these instead.  I only have them occasionally as a treat just like I would if I went out. I had the last piece of raisin toast to go with my latte. What is it about raisin toast that makes me so happy in the morning? Probably the juicy raisins right?? Sunday Sunday I indulged in a bit of online shopping. I have been very good and have not done any for such a long time. Then the other day I was chatting to my lovely friend (the wonder twin) on messenger and she was telling me about her online shopping and how fun it is to get stuff delivered. Well, that was all the motivation I needed and I was onto it!! I ordered a white quilt cover as well as European pillowcases, and regular pillowcases I was running low on these lovely candles Plus I also needed this reed diffuser. The French pear smell is my favorite! I’m looking forward to receiving these soon. Sunday night my cousin surprised me by dropping a big slice of her partner’s birthday cake on my doorstep. Lockdown means no visitors so she gave me a call to say the cake was outside my door. The cake she ordered was way too much for just the two of them. It was a win for us as the cake was a really nice rich chocolate cake with layers of cream. She sent me a photo of what the cake looked like before it was cut. It was a Pokeball!! Ha! My cousin and her partner are huge Pokemon fans and have been since they were little. My oldest son is too even though they are all just about to turn thirty soon!! That’s about all that has been going on this weekend. Although it was certainly very quiet it was still a fun family weekend. I am thankful we are all safe and praying that life will return to normal soon so friends and families can be together again. Please take care and I hope you all have a great rest of the week! Finally Friday!

Hi everyone! Yes, it’s finally Friday!! My goodness, we are racing towards the end of the year so fast. We have had a very warm week here in Sydney. The weather has just been absolutely glorious, with lots of blue skies and sunny days and temperatures reaching around the mid twentys. It’s making me excited for spring, with only a few weeks to go!! We are still in lockdown, and I think I really need to stop saying ‘we are still in lockdown’ and just accept that this will most likely be going on until November. As it is becoming apparent that there is no way we are getting out any time soon. The Covid cases just keep going up and up! But let’s move on to brighter topics and be grateful that it is indeed finally Friday! Here are some big favourites for this weeks post. ~1~ On Monday night we treated ourselves to some delicious dessert from Oliver Brown. We used Uber eats to order in. Oliver Brown serves up THE most delicious hot chocolate ever. It has just the right consistency and sweetness. Sam and I both ordered some hot chocolates. Steve and Sam had a New York cheesecake each and I got a blueberry friand. Everything was super delicious and it was just such a lovely indulgence, I guess being in lockdown means we are trying to enjoy treats like this just for fun! ~2~ I’ve been playing Words with Friends and I’m really loving it, especially when I score big points on one word! Now that it is finally Friday and I have the weekend I will get back to more of this favourite game! ~3~ These salt and vinegar chips are my favourite and I have been snacking on these all week. I just can’t seem to get enough of the salty vinegary flavour! I have been eating these delicious chips since I was a kid in primary school. Whenever I had some pocket money I would buy them from the school canteen. I usually keep my snacking for the weekend but this week I caved. ~4~ I worked three days this week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The most number of children we had was on Tuesday and we had a total of five! They have been busy building all sorts of interesting things with the magnetic tiles on the lightbox. I just love the lightbox we have at preschool, don’t the colours of the tiles look pretty? The children also used these colourful cubes to make a rainbow wall. Last week I did a blog post about lightbox activities and you can find it here. ~5~ Another favourite moment this week at preschool was reading to a couple of the little boys. They don’t often like to sit still for too long, but they were very still when they listened intently to ‘The Gruffalo” ~6~ A couple of the girls continued making ‘Gruffalo worlds’ in the block corner. This week they used the fluoro coloured scarves! ~7~ The children did some sponge painting using stencils with pretty patterns. Look at the lovely colours! ~8~ I am so happy that my plant is actually growing. I have been really making a huge effort to look after it so I’m very proud of myself as this is not one of my strengths. This little plant sits nicely on my kitchen shelf and I love how it hangs down, definitely a favourite. ~9~ My family has been enjoying playing ‘Bananagrams’. This is a fun and fast game where you have to race each other to build words. I love playing family games and I’m really looking forward to when my whole family can get together again to play. ~10~ I walked into Sams room and saw his new keyboard. Look at all the pretty lights! What a surprise as I had no idea it lit up like this and I can now finally understand why he was so excited to buy it. This just about sums up all of this week’s favourites, a short and sweet post for today where I am linking up with Andrea and Erika. I’m sure you are as glad as I am that is indeed finally Friday and we can move on to the weekend. Hope you all stay safe and well!

clean and organised fridge

A Clean and Organized fridge

Having a clean and organized fridge has made all of my meal preparations so much easier! Before we had our kitchen renovated I will admit that my fridge organization was rather sloppy (cringe). I used to store vegetables in freezer bags, there were leftovers in various containers and little bags of things stuffed in the drawers and shelves. Not good! I found myself rummaging through the fridge trying to find the bits and pieces I needed to make dinner. This meant I was constantly wasting precious time and feeling frustrated. After being at work all day, the last thing I wanted to do was spend more time in the kitchen than necessary. I promised myself that once I got my new kitchen, all this was going to change. Happily, I can report that I have lifted my fridge and kitchen organization game!! Benefits of a Clean and Organized Fridge~ There are so many benefits to having a clean and organized fridge, these are just a few 1.Your Fridge will be more energy efficient Keeping a fridge clean and organized will boost its cooling efficiency. If you fill your fridge until it is over flowing you will run the risk of blocking the air vents and impeding the airflow. This means that your poor fridge will quite possibly have a shorter life span. 2.You Will Save Money Now, that’s a great reason if I ever heard one! When my fridge is clean and organised I can clearly see what food I have and what food I need to buy. Now, when I shop I don’t double up on things like vegetables which don’t have a very long life span. I love mushrooms but because I used to store them incorrectly, they would get lost amongst the clutter and they would often go bad. I was constantly buying more mushrooms then finding poor dead mushrooms in the back of the fridge drawers. The same applies to leftovers. Leftover food in small containers is hard to see if the fridge is full. It’s no fun finding these ‘science experiments’ weeks later, trust me! 3. You will feel ‘Good’ Having a clean and organized fridge gives me the same good feelings I get when the rooms in my home are tidy. I don’t feel annoyed and frustrated when I open my fridge anymore. I can easily find the ingredients I need and I’m not wasting time looking. Nothing sends my frustration level from zero to one hundred quicker than not being able to find something. just ask my family! 4. It’s Healthier For You I think THE most important reason for keeping a fridge clean is to prevent the breeding of germs and bacteria. These nasties will cause food poisoning. Wiping up any spills straight away means my fridge won’t smell. In addition, I don’t waste time and energy scrubbing a spill that has been left to dry. Yuck! 5. Your Food Will Always Taste The Way It Should Having a clean and organized fridge means there is less chance that overlooked food items will be left to rot. I know how awful rotting food smells especially anything containing dairy. Food like eggs can absorb the smells in the fridge and that’s bad news if things are smelling off in there. Food will taste fresh when there is no bad smell to contaminate it. What I Do To Keep My Fridge Clean and Organized  1. Invest in good quality storage containers Earlier this year when we bought our new fridge I also invested in some good quality storage containers. I was hesitant about spending so much money on plastic containers but I am so glad I did. It has been worth every cent! Having nice proper storage containers for the fridge means that it is very easy to see what food items I actually have. In the past, I would just store most things in ugly freezer bags. I would ultimately overlook some things and then they would have to be thrown away. All of the nice fridge containers I bought came from a shop in Sydney called Howards Storage World. They stock every conceivable storage container you could ever need. Celery Container~ I always keep celery in the fridge as I love using it in my cooking, but I was always throwing away poor old limp celery into the bin. I found this fantastic celery container and although it is on the pricey side, I am happy to report that I have not thrown away any celery since!  It keeps my celery fresh and crisp!! that’s right crisp. truly amazing!! Berry/Grape Container~ Another container I bought is this one for grapes and berries. It has this cute basket insert which means that once the berries or grapes are washed and placed into the container they stay dry. The berries or grapes won’t be sitting in a puddle of water in the container causing them to deteriorate. Lettuce Container~ I use this square container for lettuce. It keeps it fresh and crisp for a much longer period of time than just regular freezer bags. The other bonus is that there is no risk of ending up with smooshed lettuce underneath a pile of other things in the fridge. These square containers come with a lid and they are stackable, making everything fit and look nice inside the fridge. Bits and Pieces Container~ I bought this cube container which I use to keep cheese, butter or other packaged food that has not been opened yet. That way I know exactly what I have and what I need to add to the shopping list. Everything sits neatly in this cube and that means there are no small packages of food floating around in different places around the fridge. Shallow Tray for Fruit~ I use this shallow tray for fruit like apples, pears, and oranges. Because It’s shallow this means it’s easy for me and everyone else to reach inside the fridge without having to open any drawers or pull anything

Reading to Children- A List of Favourite Children’s Books

Reading to children is so important as their little minds are absorbing all the language they hear and they are developing their listening and concentration skills. My favourite part about reading to children whether it was my own when they were little or the children from preschool is the opportunity for bonding. Reading is such a wonderful way to connect with children and many times I have been able to settle a very sad and distressed new child at preschool with a story book. Some of my fondest memories are reading to my own boys, especially when they were all bathed and cozy tucked up in bed ahhhhh bring back those days. I miss them! Over the years I have found that some books have become my favourites. I know that there are many more I could add to this list, but these are the ones that I pull out of the cupboard the most and I love reading them to my little preschool friends. I get so much joy watching their little faces full of anticipation as I turn each page. The best part is their reactions, sometimes they are wide-eyed and totally immersed in what is coming next, other times there are peals of laughter. This list is in no particular order but I guarantee that each one of these is a firm favourite at preschool. 1. The Tiger Who Came To Tea, by Judith Kerr   I just love this story and its illustrations. It’s an oldy but a goody! This beautiful classic was published in 1968 and it is about a little girl who has a tiger visit her and her mother at their home. The tiger proceeds to eat and drink everything in the house! The illustrations are lovely and capture the era when it was written. I find myself feeling very nostalgic when I read this book. The children always react so positively to the story and are always amused at the tiger and his antics. 2. Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas, by Aaron Blabey   This book is just funny!! It rhymes which is always a bonus as the children can usually guess what word is coming next. The story is of course about a piranha whose name is Brian, this alone already has me in giggling fits. The piranha in this story actually loves fruit and his piranha friends just don’t understand this at all! 3. Harriet You’ll Drive Me Wild, by Mem Fox   If you are a mum this book will be very relatable. It is a sweet story about a lovely but pesky child called Harriet. Poor Harriet is always doing things to test her poor Mothers patience. Until the Mother finally reaches boiling point. It has a lovely ending and a reminder to us grown-ups that we’ve all probably experienced reaching the end of our patience at some point in our lives. 4. It’s the Bear!, by Jez Alborough   Another fun rhyming story, this book is about a boy called Eddy who is reluctant to go on a picnic with his mum. He is afraid of running into a huge bear! This is a very funny picture book and a follow-up to Jez Alborough’s previous book ‘Where’s My Teddy’, another one of my favourites. This story has a cute twist at the end when the poor bear is really not that scary at all!! 5. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle   Well, this is certainly a classic and probably one of the most well-known children’s picture books. No matter how many times we read this at preschool, nobody ever gets tired of it. The illustrations are so unique and colourful!! 6. A Dark Dark Tale, by Ruth Brown   This ‘spooky’ book has the children truly captivated! When the last page is turned and the ending is revealed, the children inevitably roll around in fits of later and call out “Again, again!! Read it again!!” 7. Spot Goes To School, by Eric Hill   There are many books about Spot the delightful little dog and his many adventures. This is a lift the flap story and it is about Spot and his friends going to school for the first time. We read this story to the pre-school children as part of our transition to Big school programme. It is a great book to prepare them for the concept of school and all the fun activities they will enjoy there. 8. The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson   I love this story and I never get tired of reading it! It is witty and so so funny. Another great rhyming story about a very clever mouse and a poor old, not-so-scary Gruffalo. 9. Mutt Dog, by Stephen Michael King   This book is very heartwarming. It is about a scruffy, brave, smart but lonely little dog who finds a home. It captures important themes like resilience and belonging. Just beautiful!! 10. Tiddalick The Frog Who Caused A Flood, by Robert Roennfeldt   This is a creation story from the Australian Indigenous Dreamtime. It is about a very greedy and thirsty frog who drinks up all the water in the land. The other animals in the story have to work together to solve the problem of having the water depleted by Tiddalick. This book covers important issues like caring for our environment, water conservation, sharing, and teamwork. I really hope that you find this list of books helpful. Reading to children is so rewarding and these stories are guaranteed fun, memorable, and most definitely need to be read on repeat!   Click here if you would like to see some other preschool activities

strawberry milkshake

Weekend Happenings

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend and are all ready for a new week. We’re still in lockdown here in Sydney so we have just been staying home and staying safe. About the only things we’ve been up to around here are eating and watching either The Olympics or Netflix. During this weekend the weather has been quite pleasant and we have had some very beautiful sunny winter days. I tried to sit on my verandah as often as I could during the day to soak up the nice warm sun. Sometimes my neighbours come out and we have a very socially distanced chat. Other times I wave and say hello to the people walking by. Everybody is missing their loved ones so It’s nice to reach out to people by being friendly during this difficult time.  Weekend Happenings~ Saturday I enjoyed a really nice warm cup of lemon and honey. Being home for most of the time means I’ve been drinking more tea and coffee than usual so this was a nice refreshing change. I bought a bag of lemons at the fruit shop the other day and they have been so juicy. All I did was squeeze some into hot water and added a dash of honey (well, more than a dash if I’m being honest) it was so delicious and sweet. For dinner, I made a creamy chicken and mushroom pasta. Winter is just such a great reason to indulge in all the carbs. I love carbs and eat them all year round but carbs in winter equal less guilt. For this recipe, I used a light cream to try and keep the fat and calories down a tiny bit. I served it up with a side of broccoli and cauliflower and a generous sprinkle of parmesan cheese. It was so good and my whole family loved it. I really miss going to cafes and eating out on weekends. I had this incredible craving for a strawberry milkshake on Saturday night! Lucky for me we had some strawberry flavoured syrup so I could satisfy this craving. I also added a couple of fresh strawberries too. Although my milkshake was very enjoyable, I am still really looking forward to when we can go out again. I will never take a milkshake at a cafe for granted ever again, that’s for sure!! Sunday Sunday morning I discovered we had run out of Weet bix and our favourite Granola. So I quickly made a nice fresh batch. This recipe is super easy and lasts for about two weeks. It can keep either in the fridge or cupboard and it’s great for breakfast or as a snack. You can find the recipe here. While I was making the Granola, I listened to our Church sermon via Zoom. Sunday afternoon Steve went to work and I had a super late lunch while I did some work. I made myself a tuna and mayonnaise sandwich with half a leftover potato ha! I told you I love carbs!! To go with my lunch I enjoyed a delicious lemon and barley cordial. I think I must be having a lemon love affair at the moment. This Bickfords cordial is my favourite. The barley is very subtle but I think it makes the cordial less tangy than when it just contains lemon. You can add as much as you like depending on your taste. I like mine on the sweet side. Sunday night Steve got home late from work and we enjoyed a small cheese plate while he made burgers for a very late dinner. We happily stayed up late because neither of us had to go to work on Monday Yay!! My goodness, those burgers were good. I just love burgers with all the fillings. Mine had pickles, lettuce, cheese, tomato, mayonnaise, beetroot and lots of tomato sauce. Steve added pineapple and egg to his burger too. He’s braver than me. Winding up a low key weekend~ In the evening we caught up on one of our favourite shows FBI and we also watched an episode of a British crime show called Vera. It was a very intense episode and one of the major characters got killed. We were not expecting that at all. I had a final cup of hot sweet tea and kept warm with my soft blanket. It was such a cosy night and a perfect ending to every low key weekend. Much to be thankful for!! Wishing you all a happy Monday and fantastic rest of the week. For today’s post, I linked up with My Glittery Heart

Happy Friday – Friday Favourites!

Hi, Friends, and Happy Friday to you all. Thank you for joining me again for this week’s Friday Favorites. As usual for today’s post, I am linking up with Andrea and Erika. ~1~ As we are still in lockdown my hours of work have been reduced to half. Therefore I was only rostered to go into preschool on Monday and Friday this week. I feel like I blinked and bam the week was over.  What a short working week for me!! Not at all like my usual full-time load. Of course, I was happy to see my work colleagues and the handful of children we had attending. Only four on Monday and two on Friday. I enjoyed my coffee in this cute coffee cup. Most of the staff drink either tea or coffee and we use these safe non-spill cups in the classroom. I like my pink glittery one, it is definitely a favorite and puts a smile on my face, especially on Monday mornings! All the preschool staff got to choose the design and colour of their cups when we ordered them from a shop called Victorias Basement. And the other day, one of my work colleagues commented that she thought the design and colours we picked reflected our personalities. Ha! I thought that was interesting and very true! ~2~ Tuesday I had my first shot of the Pfizer vaccine. I was feeling ok about it until I was in the waiting room reading the consent form about all the things that could go wrong and then I started to panic. I know, I know there are risks with everything but it still freaked me out. Afterward when my first vaccine shot was over and done with I felt a huge relief. That feeling of relief is a real favorite! My next dose is in six weeks’ time. The Delta strain is hitting us so hard in Sydney and the case numbers and community transmission is unable to be contained at the moment. Therefore we are all being urged to get vaccinated so we can move forward and get out of lockdown. ~3~ I used some delicious fresh parsley we have growing in our garden for the dinner I was cooking. Fresh herbs are always a big favorite but I am the first to admit that I am not a gardener. If anything the further I stay away from any plants the more they flourish. A while ago when I was trying hard to actually grow and maintain a herb garden. I planted some parsley. Of course, I failed to look after it and it soon died. Somehow the parsley plant must have gone to seed and planted itself. As a result, we now have parsley growing in the garden and not the original pot plant. It’s also growing in between the bricks Ha! ~4~ We ate some yummy pizza for dinner on Wednesday night. I picked the Capriciosa and the Mexicana. They both had lots of olives which we all love. The Capriciosa also had anchovies and I really liked them, funny as I don’t usually go for anchovies. ~5~ The Australian beach volleyball women’s team got through to the Grand Final of the Olympic games! I was super excited about this. One of the girls on the team is Indigenous Australian and the other girl was born in Peru. I’m originally from Peru too! Both of the teams played a great game but the USA team was so strong! Congratulations to the USA on their Gold Medal win and congratulations to the Aussie girls on their Silver Medal win! I was at work on Friday and we sat outside in the winter sunshine to watch the game on my Ipad. It was just myself, the other staff and two little friends. I loved hearing them cheer for the Australian team “Aussie Aussie Assie Oi Oi Oi” Ha! one of them even asked me “Do you think they can hear us, Ruth?” Awww so cute. Definitely a favorite moment for me this week. ~6~ I walked into preschool on Friday morning and I was met with this beautiful Gruffalo World! Apparently, the two children who attended the previous day had set up their own ‘Gruffalo world.’  They used some materials the classroom teacher had provided and in addition, they also helped themselves to some loose parts available around the classroom. I love how the children used the splats and the colorful cubes from the lightbox. They collected the shells, sea creatures, and butterflies from the preschool shelves. I always appreciate how well resourced our classrooms are and I love how we value children’s play. At our preschool, we try really hard to provide inspiring and aesthetically pleasing materials for the children to use.   ‘The Gruffalo” by Julia Donaldson is a huge favorite at our preschool, and it’s one of my favorite stories too! ~7~ My cat ‘Sushi ‘just loves this cat food. It’s her favorite, so that makes it my favorite too as I know she will eat it all up. She just goes nuts for it! and she will purr and purr when she sees her food being poured into her bowl. So if for some reason I am running late to give her dinner, she lets me know with lots of incessant meowing! funny girl!! That wraps up this week’s Friday favorites for me. Thank you for stopping by for a little peek into some of the things that are happening in my corner of the world. Hope you all have an amazing weekend and stay safe!

berries on apple and berry loaf

Apple and Berry Gluten-Free Loaf

This delicious Apple and Berry Gluten-free loaf is incredibly moist. We love eating it for dessert served with cream or ice cream and we especially love eating it for Breakfast! That’s right dessert for breakfast minus the guilt because it’s actually full of healthy ingredients and it’s not super sweet. When we have it for breakfast we serve it up with a nice dollop of Greek yoghurt or creamy ricotta and berries. It is so delicious and it just looks so pretty with all the rich colours. The old saying “You eat with your eyes” comes to mind here and I think that this is certainly true. When a dish looks visually appealing it is even more appetizing. A good thing to note is that because the loaf is so moist it is a good idea to pop a slice under the grill and toast it first. Then it comes out with the most divine crispy edges and adds to the overall flavour and texture. A Clean and Tidy Home

I love a clean and tidy home! and I seriously cannot function when things are messy. My stress levels are high, I can’t relax and I feel annoyed. So over the years, I have managed to develop a routine to keep a clean and tidy home. And this seems to work well for our family. I have this fantasy that if I do the housework during the week I will have the whole weekend free. Unfortunately, that is just a fantasy because the reality is, that if I want my home to remain clean I think I have to do at least something every day. That being said I have forced myself to try and limit the amount of housework I do on the weekends so I can enjoy some downtime. I also like my family to enjoy their home and not feel like they can’t make a mess. Thankfully they know that if they do make a mess, they are responsible for cleaning it up. I will confess that I don’t actually love cleaning, but I don’t mind it either. For me having a clean house is my motivation for cleaning. The sense of accomplishment I feel when my housework is under control is priceless! 8 Simple Tips For A Clean And Tidy Home 1. Keep Everything In Its Place I really like the saying “A place for everything and everything in its place”. I am a firm believer in this. There is nothing worse than rummaging through drawers trying to find things. I try very hard to make sure everything has a designated spot so that if I or anyone else need something, we know exactly where to look. Even things like keys, wallets, sunglasses. We have an entry hall table with a small drawer and these items have a home there. When we are headed out for the day we can quickly grab the things we need as we fly out the door. 2. Clean the Bathroom Monday to Friday (Have The Weekend Off) I used to only clean the bathrooms once a week. We have two bathrooms, the main one, and an ensuite. I found that when I cleaned them once a week I was constantly annoyed at the state of them. I would be in there and see the toothpaste splattered on the mirror, the dust around the sink, the shower looking dull. And it just IRRITATED me! So I started to give both bathrooms a quick clean every morning before work. Now I certainly don’t do a deep clean every day. Usually, I will leave the deep cleaning for when I think it really needs it which is about once a week. I use a bathroom and shower cleaner to spray the sink, the bath, and the shower screens. I wipe everything down. Then I disinfect the toilet and toilet bowl. I give the mirror a quick spritz and leave it all shiny. Finally, I will use a microfiber mop and disinfectant to whizz around the floor and it’s done! It probably only takes me between fifteen to twenty minutes to get both of the bathrooms clean. The great thing about cleaning the bathrooms every weekday is that I get the weekends free from bathroom cleaning. It’s kind of like my weekend reward! 3. Do Laundry Every Day Every night before I go to bed I put my washing in the machine and set the timer so it starts washing about an hour before I get up in the morning. Then the next morning I will hang this load out to dry and put another load in if I need to. We have a lot of laundry. There are school uniforms, sports uniforms, work uniforms (My husband is in the Hospitality Industry), and a whole lot of other laundry. You get the picture! Washing and folding laundry every day means that it never has a chance to pile up. Of course, when it rains, my beautiful routine flies out the window because we don’t have a clothes dryer. But we work it out and stay on top of it. 4. Leave the Kitchen Clean Every Night We always clean the kitchen straight after dinner. I wipe the countertops and cupboard doors leaving everything shiny. We stack the dishwasher but I won’t run it till just before I go to bed. I love watching something on television and having a cup of tea and a treat once the day is done. I put any cups etc we use after dinner in the dishwasher and then I turn it on as the last chore of the night. It is just the best feeling when I walk into the kitchen in the morning and everything is all reset for a new day. 5. Vacuum and Mop the Floors Every Second Day My house is small so this is very doable. I have a Dyson stick I love and can not live without. I will quickly run the Dyson stick on my floorboards and I am constantly amazed at how the dust barrel fills up every single time!! How there can always be so much dust?? Sigh! Then I use my microfiber mop with the built-in spray bottle and give the floors a quick mop. I can usually get this done while dinner is cooking. 6. Tidy the Living Room Like I’ve mentioned before we like to sit in the lounge room and relax in the evening.  Some days it’s just me as my husband will be at work or sometimes especially on the weekends, it will be all of us enjoying a movie. Regardless of what night it is. We always make sure to give the living room a quick tidy once we’re done. It takes hardly any effort at all! 7. Change the Sheets Every Week I just love the feel and smell of clean crisp sheets. So every Friday I change mine and my son will strip his bed on Wednesdays. This routine means our
