Friday Favourites

Hi friends, it’s time to share some of my favourite things for this week! I hope you all had a good one. Didn’t this week just zoom by in a flash? But that’s okay because now we can welcome back the weekend—Amen! This week started off cold and gloomy. The clouds and wet, rainy weather lingered on after a very wet weekend. It’s hard to feel upbeat when the weather is like that. But thankfully, things shifted, and by the end of the week, the sun was shining brightly again. Yes, it was cold, but it was warm in the sun, and seeing the blue skies always makes everything so much better! Sunny days are my favourite! When I walked into the kitchen this morning and saw the sun shining brightly, I knew instantly that it was going to be a good day! Then as I walked to work, even though it was extremely chilly, the clear blue skies and golden sunshine made me happy. I’ll have to keep this moment in mind because I checked the forecast, and yes, it will be raining all of next week. Sigh! Speaking of walking to work, well, I haven’t done as much of it as I’d like lately. My husband is home, which means the car is home, and that in turn means I’ve given in and driven to work. Aaaargh!! My goal for next week is to pretend the car isn’t available and walk! I love walking, and I feel so much better on the days that I do. Funny story though, the other day I forgot that I had walked, and when I left work, I was looking for my car. For a second, I thought, “Oh no, it’s been stolen!” Ha, who would want to steal such a teeny tiny Suzuki? It took me a little while to realise that, duh, the car was at home! Anyway back to more favourites. This olive sourdough is the best and that’s probably why it’s usually sold out by the time I get to the fruit shop after work. But I got lucky this week and I nabbed the last loaf. I’m not much of a breakfast eater during the week. But on the weekends, I do enjoy a very late breakfast. The other day, I was craving porridge, so I bought these sachets. They are easy to make and deliciously creamy. Healthy too, if you ignore the amount of brown sugar I added… shhh. This raisin toast is my favourite. These mini flakes are for me but everyone at home thinks I like to share. Washed and ready-to-grab fruit is a favourite of mine. Whenever I get my grocery order, I make sure to wash everything to save the hassle of doing it later. Good looking fruit, huh? I always feel like I’m winning whenever I need cream for a recipe and I have the long-life version in the cupboard! The other night I made Mexican street corn salad to go with our nachos. It’s so crunchy, cheesy and zesty. It’s full of our family’s favourite ingredients like corn, parmesan cheese, feta cheese, mayonnaise and red onion. This made me laugh and I couldn’t agree more! Hahaha! Here’s hoping the weekend goes by real slow. Thank you so much for stopping by today and I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Linking up with Andrea and Erika

Friday Favourites

Hello friends and happy Friday! It’s great to be here to share some Friday favourites, thanks so much for stopping by! It’s been so cold! I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll keep saying it until the first day of spring—I’m NOT a fan! Haha. I need to keep reminding myself that at least it’s not as cold as it is in many other parts of the world. Plus, there’s always delicious comfort food to enjoy! I shared on Monday that I made some yummy ramen over the weekend. I made enough for leftovers, so we had some for lunch the next day. Soup in winter is the best and I love it; it’s comforting, filling, and healthy. I added delicious veggies like shredded carrots, wombok cabbage, spring onions, coriander, bean sprouts, and celery. I also included chopped garlic and ginger to boost our immunity and help fight off any nasty colds. So far, so good—none of us have been sick yet (but now that I’ve said that, you know what might happen!). Anyway, fingers crossed we stay healthy this winter. I love the vibrant colours of fresh vegetables and enjoy taking photos of them! I’ve got a bunch of fruit and vegetable photos on my camera roll. I once watched a movie about a couple who got divorced, partly because the wife was always taking photos of vegetables. The husband found it so annoying for some reason. Hahaha! Maybe I need to be careful! Lots of my Friday favourites are food related and this week is no exception. I made a zucchini slice the other day and tweaked the recipe to make it better. I’ve made zucchini slices in the past that have turned out meh. So this time instead of adding the onion and the bacon to the mix raw, I cooked them first. I also added garlic and parmesan cheese and it was a winner! It was exciting to boil eggs exactly how I like them—a bit soft in the middle. I’ve finally learned how to time them just right—you set a timer instead of just hoping for the best, as I always did. That makes sense, right? Some of this week’s favourite dinners include baked barramundi with garlic and lemon juice. Chicken stir fry with noodles and crunchy cashews. Even this girl is feeling the cold and is always looking for someone at home she can curl up with. This notebook contains my brain. I’ve increasingly become Mrs. Forgetful (is it age, being too busy, or wine…who knows!). Anyway, I am now writing down everything I need to remember. Siri helps me too, but I love this notebook because it’s tangible and always there when I need it—if I can remember where I’ve put it. I also use it to write down meals that have turned out well. I don’t follow recipes and sometimes get creative, adding this or that. Or I may change things, like I did with the zucchini slice. But then, the next time I make the same dish, I often forget what I did to improve it. This way, I have a record of my successful tweaks and can recreate those dishes. Yay! Aha! We got good news when Steve saw the knee surgeon on Wednesday. Last week, we were both a bit down after the appointment because the surgeon was still unhappy with how the knee was healing and wanted us to come in again this week. He even said scary things like, “If it doesn’t heal, then we’ll have to go in surgically and wash out any infection.” Yikes! Turns out there wasn’t any infection in the actual wound, which was a huge relief. The surgeon took the time to explain (properly this time; last time he rushed us out the door) that Steve had a severe allergic reaction to the glue they used, causing the skin on his knee to burn. So, it looked like an ulcer, but it wasn’t. I’ve found that sometimes doctors may overlook the importance of thoroughly explaining things to patients. Anyway, we are very happy that things are okay and on track! After the doctor’s appointment, I dropped Steve off at home and went to get some more pain meds from the pharmacy. I got a bit sidetracked when one of my favourite clothes shops was calling me! I went in, tried on a couple of things, and couldn’t resist buying yet another sleeveless black top. It met my rule: I won’t buy it unless I love it. Maybe I should add another rule: avoid stepping into clothing stores altogether! But nah, I love clothes too much, and I try to avoid impulse buys. Look at how well this plant is growing! It used to live in the bathroom and looked sad and small. So, I relocated it to the sunny kitchen window, and now it’s flourishing. Happy, flourishing plants are a big favourite for this reformed plant assassin. That wraps up some favourites! I’m going to thaw out my right hand, which feels frozen from typing, and then get moving to cook dinner. It’s so cold!! I hope you all have a great weekend, and if you’re enjoying the sun in the northern hemisphere, please catch some rays for me! Everyone else, stay warm!! Linking up with Andrea and Erika

Friday Favourites

Hi friends, it’s time to share some favourites! I hope you all had an amazing week and are as excited as I am to welcome the weekend! I love this link-up because whenever it’s been ‘one of those weeks’ and I’m struggling to find some joy. It reminds me to focus on the little things that bring happiness. When you put all these little things together you end up with some pretty cool Friday favourites. Having the day off from work on Monday was a big favourite because who doesn’t love a long weekend? I knocked off a couple of things from my to-do list so that felt great! On Tuesday, we were back at work. I snapped a photo of this pile of leaves in the playground. You know what’s funny, and at the same time, not so funny? We don’t have many deciduous trees around here during winter—all those evergreens—but of course, our preschool playground has this one deciduous tree. Its leaves are stunning this time of year, but they seem to rain down endlessly for weeks. And guess who ended up on playground setup duty this week? Yep, me and I spent the morning raking, only to see it covered again by the time we headed out for afternoon play. Just another day in the life at the preschool during winter! My sunny always smiling positive colleague (I love sunny smiley positive people!). She brought some healthy snacks to work and shared some with me. Oh my goodness they were so delicious! Crunchy, salty and a teeny bit sweet – all of my favourite flavours rolled up in each cluster of crispiness! I’m going to add them to my shopping order for sure. I remember feeling a bit melancholy when Sam finished school a year and a half ago—I realised I wouldn’t be packing his school lunches anymore (boy that’s gone fast!). Looking back, maybe it wasn’t so much about missing the chore but about seeing him grow up so quickly! Haha! Anyway, I still like to pack his lunches when he goes to work at his casual job a few times a week. And yes I still get boomerang fruit! This banana made a couple of round trips inside Sam’s lunchbox. In the end, I took it to work with me where it reached its final destination. We went to our appointment at Australia Post to lodge our paperwork for our new passports on Thursday afternoon. There’s a significant increase coming on July 1st, from $346 to $398! Fun fact: this means Australian passports will soon be the second most expensive in the world, behind only Liechtenstein, where they cost $444. So I was happy to get this sorted before the price hike kicks in! Steve lodged his paperwork with no problem at all. But I had to get my photo retaken because I had a slight smile and my fringe was touching my eyebrow—guaranteed rejection by the passport office. I thought the original one was unflattering enough, but no. The one I had taken on Thursday—well, that will make a fantastic poster for Halloween or Australia’s Most Wanted. The lady who took my photo was so sweet. She kept saying, “Think happy thoughts” as she snapped the picture. It was hard to think happy thoughts when I couldn’t hide behind my fringe, couldn’t smile, and had a camera pointed right at me. I kept telling myself, “Think about Disneyland!” But no happy thoughts really came to me. All this is perfectly captured in that one photo I will have in my passport for the next ten years… excellent. One little thing that made me happy this week was these tissue boxes. The new pictures on the boxes are fun and look much nicer than the previous washed-out designs they used to have. After the passport photo incident on Thursday, I picked up some supplies to make me feel better—facial wax strips and a sheet mask. Those photos showed no mercy! The temps have dropped, and it’s freezing! It’s only day 14 of winter, but I think that’s enough now—I want it to stop. At least there’s always comfort food—Greek-style chicken with rice and veggies for dinner made us feel warm and cozy. I found some leftover pizza in the fridge at preschool and had a couple of slices. Finding anything other than playdough in the fridge is always a big win! The kids made it as a cooking experience, and I’m hoping the oven killed all the extra unwanted toppings they may have added—if you know what I mean. And now it’s Friday afternoon, and I couldn’t be happier! As we were walking out of the preschool after a very long week. My colleagues and I were laughing about a random conversation involving Chinese lucky numbers and which one of us had the luckiest number. It was one of those moments that made me happy and grateful to work where I do. A good laugh was the perfect way to end the week because working with little ones is a tough gig. So having fun with colleagues whom I am lucky enough to call friends is gold! I hope you have a fun weekend sprinkled with just the right amount of rest and relaxation and I look forward to being back here on Monday. See ya! Linking up with Andrea and Erika

Friday Favourites

Hi friends and welcome to Friday favourites! I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika to share a few favourites, thanks so much for being here! Last Friday, I returned to the salon where I got my keratin treatment earlier in the year. This time, I went for a haircut and I’m so happy to have found a hairdresser who makes me feel comfortable and doesn’t cut my fringe too short! I have a short fringe phobia from way back when my mum would keep cutting until she got it straight. Oh man, I’ve got some pics I could show you—I’ll have to dig them out sometime! Haha!! I didn’t get anything too different from my usual style, except now I have a bit more fringe and I’ve had the layers cut off at the back.  I’ve gone back to the 90s when I wore a long bob. I forgot to take a photo when I left the salon, and I don’t want to take one at the minute—it’s been a day and I don’t want to scare you! I love getting pampered at the salon. They serve coffee and snacks, and they give the best head massages when they shampoo my hair. It feels amazing! Before the rain came on Wednesday, we had beautiful sunsets like this one. Last week I was all over the place with my usual cleaning routine. So finally seeing the bottom of the laundry basket was a huge favourite! This was one of three piles I folded! Wednesday night was the State of Origin rugby league match. I don’t care much for rugby league, but Steve loves it! So while he watched and yelled at the TV, I worked on my travel journal. I’m writing down all our exciting plans for our big trip in January, including attractions, must-see landmarks, and a packing list. I’ve been getting lots of comfortable travel outfit ideas on Pinterest and researching places we want to eat, like Wendy’s, IHOP, Chick-fil-A, and Jack in the Box. Haha! I know that might sound a bit strange, but we don’t have these fast food chains here. So I’m super curious to try them after hearing so much about them. I know our trip is still six months away (30 weeks, 3 days, 11 hours, 53 minutes, and 11 seconds to be exact), but the more I plan, the more excited I get. Planning is half the fun, right? Speaking of our trip, the suitcases I ordered from Myer arrived. We have no luggage because we haven’t gone overseas as a family in forever! We did go to New Zealand for a week in 2008 for a wedding, but we only took small duffle bags, and Sam borrowed my cousin’s suitcase for his recent trip to Japan. So it was time to invest in proper luggage, and I got three large Samsonite hardshell suitcases. They sure weren’t cheap, but luckily, I got them at 40% off. Now onto some food favourites for the week! Wednesday night (State of Origin night) we had corn crackers with salami and hummus. I popped some creamy camembert topped with fig jam, and walnuts in the oven to warm up and it was extra gooey and delicious. Then we had good old meat pies, mashed potato and peas for dinner. It was such a treat because I hardly ever buy frozen foods. It’s soup weather! So I made a big pot of minestrone and took some to work for lunch and made my coworkers jealous. Hehe. I nabbed the last piece of leftover lasagna before it was all gone! Last night we had oven-baked barramundi with wedges, coleslaw and tartare sauce. The jar of tartare sauce was nearly empty so I made my own. It was so easy and I don’t know why I never thought of making it before. It’s just mayonnaise, chopped pickles, lemon juice and dill. I was happy with how the potato wedges turned out. I coated the potatoes in olive oil then seasoned them with salt and pepper and sprinkled some paprika and flour to give them a crispy coating. Steve being off from work means we get to eat dinner together every night! It’s such a novelty! Luke popped over the other night and it was the four of us again like old times. We had chicken thigh cutlets with rice and salad. That wraps up some of this week’s favourites. We’re excited for the upcoming three-day weekend, due to Monday being the King’s birthday public holiday. Long weekends are truly my favourite! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, and I look forward to being back on Monday.

Friday Favourites

Hi friends! Happy Friday! This week has flown by and totally run away from me. I thought that I would have so much time this week because I’ve been off from work looking after Steve. But no! Instead I have been on the go nonstop and totally out of my usual routine. So I’m just popping in to say hi and share one big favourite! My family are always my number one favourites! I think they are the best! They are always there for me, and this week, as usual, they have been so supportive and helpful in so many ways after Steve underwent surgery last Friday. Half of our cousin connect group visited him last Saturday night, we left the hospital quite late and stopped off for dinner at an Italian restaurant. We had pizza and pasta, and I didn’t realize how hungry I was until the food came out. My appetite is the first thing to go when I’m a bit stressed! Sunday we were back at the hospital to pick him up. It sure was a quick stay after such a big operation! We were planning on catching an Uber as my car is too small and Sam’s car is too low. There was no way Steve would have been able to manage getting in and out of either of our cars with an operated knee and crutches. My cousin offered to come and get him and I didn’t even have to ask. She has a seven-seater SUV so my family and her family all fitted in the car very comfortably. Haha, we all went as one big group to pick Steve up from the hospital. Afterwards, I asked them to stay for dinner, and we had turkey burgers and finished off with ice cream cones for dessert. It was a fun way to welcome Steve home! My friends have also been incredibly supportive, sending texts, checking in on us, and offering so much love and support. Kind friends and loving family are huge favourites, and I just wanted to share how grateful I am for them. It’s a super short and sweet Friday Favourites today! Thank you so much for stopping by, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Hope to see you back here on Monday!

Friday Favourites

Hey there, friends! It’s great to be here sharing some Friday favourites on this sunny autumn day. I’m hanging out at Kings Cross Library, catching up on blogs as well as blogging while I wait for my husband to go into surgery. The library has these comfy nooks where you can work from and here I am! Well, Steve was supposed to go in for surgery an hour ago, but there’s been a delay. Not to worry, I’m sure it won’t be long now. But I sure am glad that I brought my laptop with me so I have something to do while I wait. I have two big favourites to share, and I’m happy to say that they are both related to one of my favourite topics–kindness! Assessment Done and Dusted! First up I’m ecstatic to say that I have finished the first part of what feels like a neverending study journey. It’s only been three months so maybe I’m exaggerating. It feels neverending though! As part of my course, I had to have a workplace assessment. And the assessor came to visit me at preschool on Tuesday and she couldn’t have been nicer. So that is a huge favourite! When she first arrived she assured me that everything was going to be fine and I shouldn’t be nervous. She was so kind and almost made me feel relaxed (almost, haha). Anyway, she was lovely and sat in the classroom watching how I went about the morning. The kids must have sensed she was friendly because they kept coming to her and saying hi asking ‘Why are you here?’. I loved her response ‘to play!” She said, how sweet! Afterwards, we headed to the staffroom where she had a stack of questions waiting for me. I had already completed numerous assessment tasks, and now I had to provide verbal responses while she took notes. What a process! After about two hours, we finally finished. Phew, and hooray! Once I said goodbye and escorted her out of the building, I returned to the staffroom and happily collapsed over a chair like a ragdoll. My coworker saw me and laughed. Now I have to wait a few weeks for results (the kind assessor assured me I had nothing to worry about) and then I can get on to starting the next part of my study journey. Surgery Day Today is surgery day for Steve and I mentioned earlier that I was waiting for him to go in. He just sent me a text a few minutes ago – he’s prepped and ready. Today he will get a new knee and then begin a three-month recovery. He’s having the operation at East Sydney Private Hospital. And this morning we caught the train and got off at King Cross station, the nearest station to the hospital. Sam offered to drive us in but it was easier to catch the train. Google Maps said it was a 10-minute walk to the hospital but when we got out of the station we were both unsure which way to go. So I stopped a lady to ask her for directions and she was also unsure. She pulled out her phone and started searching for the hospital. She found where it was and then offered to drive us there! I was speechless, Steve and I both were! She was so friendly and on the way she shared that her name was Hannah and she was from the U.K. but had lived in the area for 20 years. We drove for at most five minutes. When we got out of the car, she wished us well and said she’d pray that Steve’s surgery would go well. It was such a pleasure meeting kind Hannah from the U.K. She was beautiful on the outside and the inside! Meeting kind people like her encourages me to remember to keep spreading kindness. When we got to the hospital and met with the nurse who took Steve’s details etc. He asked us how we got to the hospital and we shared that a kind stranger had given us a lift. He too was amazed and said ‘There’s hope for humanity’. Haha, I agree! I guess this week has been all about kindness and I can’t think of a better favourite than that! The assessor was kind and reassuring, and my work colleagues have also been very kind, showering me with encouragement and confidence that I was going to nail assessment day. Then there was kindness from a stranger this morning and of course so much kindness from you guys in the comments last week. Thank you so much, everybody! You all made this week so much better than I ever could have hoped for. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Update- It’s 7 pm Sydney time and the nurse finally called me to say that Steve is in recovery. I’m waiting to see him but it will be another 45 minutes until he’s moved to his room. He went into surgery at around 1 pm so it’s been a long day! Linking up with Andrea and Erika

Fun Favourites

Hello friends and hello Friday! Thanks so much for joining me today as I share a few fun favourites for this week. Sam’s Home! My first fun favourite is, of course, having my boy back home after his trip to Japan! Yay!! We were very excited to go and pick him up last Saturday morning. I love going to the arrivals area at the airport and seeing the joyful reunions, tears and great big hugs. I get all emotional and choked up, just like I do every time I see the final scene of ‘Love Actually’. The plane landed at 8.10 am and we waited about an hour for Sam and his friends to get through customs etc. They were so tired and sick with colds. One of the guys had gotten sick in the first few days of the trip, and then the other two fell like dominoes. Sam said they had an amazing time and he loved Japan, but he was really glad to be home. I loved hearing this because I expected that he may have had the post-holiday blues. And I wouldn’t have blamed him at all because I remember always feeling the post-camp blues when I returned home after having had so much fun with my friends at church camp. Souvenirs From Japan Sam brought back a whole pile of snacks for us and the cousins. Some of Sam’s stories about his trip have had me in stitches, while others not so much. For instance, I’m glad I was blissfully oblivious to the fact that they spent most of the trip riding electric scooters in traffic minus helmets. According to Sam, the traffic isn’t as bad in Japan as it is here in Sydney and helmets are recommended but not compulsory for adults. Interesting! Ha! This miniature soba noodle set he brought back for me is just the cutest! He also got me a Curious George fold-up bag from a monkey park in Kyoto. A Samurai sword letter opener for his dad. A Pokémon plush for his big brother haha! As well as some Attack On Titan books and Magic cards. None of us expected any souvenirs and I thought Sam did amazing with his choices for us. Winter Gala 2024 Another fun favourite was seeing my cousin perform at the Winter Gala. She dances the Bachata with a dance studio and she delivered a fantastic performance with her partner and the rest of the group. I’m always amazed at how effortless partner dancing looks when other people do it. I’m terrible at it and always end up leading, which is a real mess because I don’t know how to partner dance at all! Mother’s Day Mother’s Days are tough and I guess they always will be. I felt sad for most of the morning, but then I gradually cheered up after receiving some beautiful Mother’s Day wishes from my family as well as some super kind and thoughtful texts from friends. My beautiful friend sent me this photo of her gorgeous kids (I love these two!) and a rainbow. I love that she always sends me rainbow pics whenever she sees one. For us, it’s a symbol that our mums are reaching out to us, and sure enough, on a rainy and miserable Mother’s Day, they did just that. Hi Mum! In the end Mothers Day turned out to be a perfectly low key day, which is exactly what I needed. Sam was still recovering from an ear infection, so we stayed home, ordered take away and watched the Barbie movie. I had already seen it but Sam and Steve hadn’t, and since it was Mothers Day, they were happy to watch it with me. Sam enjoyed it and Steve said it was the best movie he had ever seen – after he woke up. Mid-week Dinner With Friends Another fun favourite was having a mid-week event to look forward to. Our friends invited us over for dinner on Wednesday night, and we had such a lovely night. These friends are more like family than friends, and we have known them forever. We’ve shared all the highs and lows that life has thrown our way. Friends like this are priceless! For dessert, we had some chocolates and nougat–my favourite! Yum, I hadn’t had any nougat since Christmas and I more than made up for it. Blue Skies A big favourite this week was finally seeing some blue sky after so many rainy days. I snapped this pic while I was walking home after finishing work on Thursday. Blue skies make me happy! Self-Care At Work Our director at work put a self-care sign with cute illustrations on the staff room fridge and I think it’s full of great tips. I’m happy that I work with some uplifting colleagues and I’m also lucky enough to be able to call two of them my besties! And that’s a wrap for a few of this week’s fun favourites! Thank you so much for being here and I hope you have an amazing weekend. I look forward to being back here on Monday. See ya! Linking up with Andrea and Erika.

Friday Favourites

Hi everyone I hope that you all had an amazing week! It’s time to link up with Andrea and Erika to share a few of this week’s favourites. Just a heads up, this post may contain affiliate links, which means I might earn a small commission if you decide to buy something, at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support! While going back to the work routine on Monday was not really a favourite. It was good to start the term with a pupil-free day. It meant that we had a chance to settle in, set up the playrooms, have meetings and enjoy a special lunch as a team. Food is always the way to my heart so when our director ordered Subway and sushi-  well, I was practically dancing with joy! Continuing with one of my favourite subjects: food! During the school holidays, Steve made me lunch almost every day while I worked on smashing through some not-so-fun assessment tasks. Food is incredibly motivating! I could say that doing extra study is giving me more grey hairs, but that might not be entirely true. It certainly feels that way, though! Anyway, during my last trip to the hairdresser, she suggested I only colour my roots instead of always doing my entire hair, as it was drying out the ends too much. I found this Clairol root touch-up on Amazon the other day and tried it for the first time. I loved the fact that I didn’t have to mix anything. But I think my grey roots need a mega-powerful colour punch! While the pre-mixed root touch-up is incredibly convenient. I noticed that after one wash, the semi-permanent solution is not going to last very long (insert very sad face here). However, I still think it’s a great for when you need a quick touch-up that lasts a few washes. It might also work better for those who have less aggressive grey roots than mine! Oh my goodness! These Bugles have become my favourite snack lately. They are so delicious and nothing like I have ever tasted before. They don’t sell these at the supermarket here but I found them at a petrol station that has a corner shelf full of American snacks! What a find!! My lovely friend gave me this military-style jacket, and I absolutely adore it! It’s perfect for autumn—comfortable, and it fits just right. I had a similar-colored jacket that I used to wear all the time, but it’s probably time to retire it now. Military-style jackets are definitely a must-have in any wardrobe, I think! Now that I have quit being a plant assassin, I love having lots of greenery around the house. The other day, my cousin came over and taught me how to grow new plants by cutting them in a specific way to encourage root growth. I think it’s called propagation – oooooh I’m even learning big fancy plant terminology too! I just hope that I cut them in the right place, time will tell I guess. Simple meals are often the best! The other night we had cheese with French baguette and steamed mussels for dinner. These wool socks are definitely a favourite! Now that the weather has turned cold, they are brilliant for keeping my feet warm in the preschool playground. My biggest favourite for this week was Luke and his lovely partner coming over for dinner on Wednesday night. They came to say bye to Sam who was flying out on a one-week trip to Japan on Thursday morning. It was a last-minute plan and we had such a lovely night together. It’s been a while since we had seen Luke’s partner as she can’t make our cousin get-togethers because she works every weekend. On my walk home from work, I stopped off at the fruit shop where they also sell a variety of frozen goodies. I bought a bag of pork and vegetable dumplings and we had them as an entree. For mains, we had teriyaki salmon with salads and rice. Haha, I just realised that we had a Japanese dish for dinner! It wasn’t planned as we often have this favourite meal on a Wednesday night. Luckily, I had a frozen dessert that I bought on one of my trips to Ikea during the school holidays. Ha! I was amazed at how we put together a delicious meal so fast and happy that we had a well-stocked freezer! I’ve found that last-minute get-togethers often turn out to be the most memorable and enjoyable. While it wouldn’t have mattered if we had simply eaten plain two-minute noodles. I was certainly grateful for having done my meal planning earlier in the week! On Thursday morning we were all up early to take Sam to the airport. I was surprised how quickly they checked in! We took a quick photo and said “Goodbye, take care, be good, look after your belongings, watch out for each other” and a whole lot of other advice. I’m sure most of it went over their heads. But we as parents must say these things even if it’s only for our own peace of mind! Here is Sam (wearing the Asics sloppy joe) with his buddies. I was very relieved to see this last night! The boys landed safely and later on Sam reached out and messaged me sounding very excited to begin his adventure in Japan! That brings me to the end of this week’s favourites, thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you have an amazing weekend and If you’re a Sar Wars fan, Happy May the 4th tomorrow!

Canberra

Our Trip To Canberra

Hi friends and welcome to Friday Favourites! Today I’m recapping our overnight trip to Canberra and I’m so happy you have stopped by. Early Monday morning I set out on a road trip to Canberra with my cousin her husband, two kids and her mother-in-law who was visiting from Ohio. I had been looking forward to this trip so much. I love hanging out with my cousins and a trip with them was definitely the highlight of my autumn school holiday! Canberra Canberra is the capital city of Australia and it’s located in the heart of the Australian Capital Territory. This amazing city often sits in the shadows of Sydney and Melbourne. But it’s the place where you’ll discover key political institutions like Parliament House. Canberra is all about meticulously planned geometrical streets with tons of beautiful green spaces. It’s so quiet compared to Sydney! I think every kid from NSW goes to Canberra for an overnight excursion in year 6. I know that I still remember my trip even though it was a zillion years ago. My younger cousins recently visited Canberra with their school. But they both agreed that it was more fun this time because they could roam and explore. Instead of being herded around with their school group. Fun Facts about Canberra Bush Capital: Canberra is often called the “Bush Capital” because it’s full of green spaces and so close to nature reserves. Designed for Democracy: The layout of Canberra was chosen through an international design competition, with Walter Burley Griffin’s plan ultimately selected from over 130 entries. Floriade: Canberra hosts Floriade, Australia’s largest flower festival, each spring. Floriade attracts visitors from all around the world! They come to visit the spectacular and very colourful floral displays. Home to Embassies: As the capital city, Canberra is home to numerous embassies. The Australian Alps: Despite being inland, Canberra is just a few hours’ drive from the Snowy Mountains where you can ski and snowboard during winter. Our Trip! As soon as we got to Canberra we headed straight to Questacon – Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre. It’s full of hands-on exhibits with immersive experiences like a lightning demonstration and an earthquake simulator. It reminded me a little of The Powerhouse Museum we have in Sydney. I think this was my favourite! It’s amazing how much fun you can have with some air and toilet rolls. After Questacon we went to check into our Airbnb and this was my room for the night. My cousin E claimed her room. After we got settled we went to Parliament House. Inside, we spotted Lego Parliament House and it was so cool! Can you see the three baddies sitting in the back haha! This is the view of Old Parliament House. Then it was time for dinner at Guzman and Gomez. I had a delicious burrito bowl which I devoured as I was starving after all the sightseeing. After dinner it was time to go home and we were all in bed by 9 – so early but we were exhausted! Day Two We were up early the next morning and some of us went for a walk. It was a very cool 7ºC so a hot chocolate hit the spot. After our walk, we went back home to grab the rest of the sleepy heads. We went to a nearby cafe for breakfast. It gradually got warmer and warmer – such crazy autumn weather but I love it! We headed to the Arboretum and spent time admiring the beautiful scenery. We went back to the Airbnb and packed up. It was time to visit The War Memorial. So sad to see the faces of the many fallen soldiers of World War 2. I found the miniature battle scenes I remembered so vividly from when I visited as a kid. I threw a coin in the water and made a wish. And just like that our trip to Canberra was over, hmph! We had so much fun and I treasured every minute I spent with some of my cousins. We drove back to Sydney and made a few stops along the way. I think we visited almost every McDonald’s from Canberra to Sydney! Haha. Just in case I didn’t post enough photos, I made a little video of our trip you might like to watch. I hope you all have an amazing weekend Happy Friday everyone!   Linking up with Andrea and Erika.

New Year's recap

Two Favourites

Hey there, friends! Happy Friday! As of 3:46 PM today, I’m officially on autumn break – time to finally take a breather! I’m excited to join Andrea and Erika for Friday Favourites. Can you believe I only managed to remember to snap three photos this week? It’s been quite a week, and I seem to be saying that a lot lately. Probably because term one of preschool has been quite interesting! Haha, I was trying to come up with a way to describe it, but I think I will stick to calling it ‘interesting’. Anyway, I made it through, and now it’s time to enjoy the break! Two Favourites It’s going to be a short and sweet Friday Favorites post today because I’m feeling pretty tired. Next week, I’ll be back to share all about our latest Cousin Connect get-together and a life update. Even though I’m sure I had plenty of favourite moments during the week, I forgot to take photos, and now I feel as if everything is a blur. So, for today, I’m sharing two favourites and three photos. My husband bought a new phone, a Samsung Galaxy something (I can’t recall the full name). His old phone was about 6 or 7 years old and didn’t have any sound. So he couldn’t hear it when it rang, which was pretty annoying whenever I tried to call him. It was definitely time for an upgrade. I think I was more excited about his new phone than he was! I used his phone to capture a photo of a massive drop of water that was on the plant by our front door. After a torrential downpour the night before, this huge drop of rain must have accumulated on the leaf. Isn’t it amazing! What’s also amazing is that as I was about to take the photo with Steve’s fancy new phone, I said “Wow” out loud, and guess what? The phone just went ahead and took the picture all on its own! I was so surprised and I thought it must have been a fluke so I tried it again and yep, it did the same thing. WOW!! Midweek dinner out with friends was a fun favourite! Cheers! Oh my goodness, that night I had the best burger I’ve had in a very long time! I mean, it might just be my favourite burger ever, I think! The burger patty was so tender and full of flavour. It was cooked so that it was quite rare, which is not a thing over here. All our burgers are always well done and if we ever see any pink in the middle of the patty it’s an instant cause for panic and fears of immediate food poisoning. But we were in a very nice restaurant and this burger was no ordinary burger. I can still vividly remember the flavour of the truffle aioli! So good! The shoestring fries were also divine, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. My only complaint and that of my friends was that it needed a pickle on the side for some crunch and acidity. Haha, we sat there critiquing the burger as if we were food critics. The plush atmosphere must have gone to our heads or maybe it was the Aperol spritz! Nah, it really needed a pickle! And that’s it for today friends! A very short and sweet look at two favourites. I hope you have an amazing weekend and thank you so much for stopping by. I’m going to hop off, have a shower, eat dinner and watch an old favourite movie. I haven’t decided which one yet but I’m sticking to an oldie because chances are that I will fall asleep halfway through, if not before! Happy Friday!
