A Fresh New Year

Hi everyone! It’s so good to be back again for a fresh new year of Friday favourites. Well didn’t the last couple of weeks just fly by so fast!! It’s like we blinked and all the festivities were over. I’m excited for the next few weeks as I am off from work until the 28th of January and I really hope time shifts to a snail pace. As usual, I am linking up with Andrea and Erika for today’s post. So let’s jump right in with my first favourite 1 Christmas with my family!!! I hosted this year and even though my house is small we all managed to squish in together and have a wonderful time. We ate a big delicious dinner with all the trimmings and because my side of the family is from South America that means that we traditionally celebrate on Christmas eve. Makes life easy because this means we can always spend Christmas Day with my husband’s side of the family. 2 I was so excited to make a trifle mostly from scratch and I think it turned out quite well. Last year I made one using a store-bought jam roll and it didn’t taste great. It looked pretty but I wasn’t happy with the flavour. It just didn’t taste right. So this year I made my own jam roll. The first one I made looked and tasted like a sweet omelette, ugh. Then I made a second one but I waited too long after it was cooked. So when the time came to roll it up, the jam roll had cooled off too much causing it to crack and split. Sigh, I was so determined that I made a third and I guess that’s why the saying goes, third time’s a charm because yes, my jam roll finally turned out just right!!   I also made my own cranberry jelly instead of using packet jelly and I am so glad that I did because it tasted great. I had big plans to make the custard from scratch but by then I was running out of time, energy and patience. So I used Paul’s Thick and Creamy custard from the supermarket. It tasted pretty good but I’m determined that next year I will try and make my own custard from scratch too! 3 I was happy with these Christmas party favours. They were super easy to put together. I bought the hot chocolate and marshmallow spoons from Kmart. They came in packs of four so all I had to do was divide them up and wrap them individually in cellophane bags. I made the personalised gift tags using Canva, then I just tied it up with string and added a little bell. Easy peasy!! 4 My husband had to work on New Year’s eve and my son was away on a beach holiday with his friend and his friends family so my mum and I happily stayed home. We celebrated with some prawns and oysters. Later on, we watched “Dirty Dancing” on TV. I have seen this movie so many times and I really love it but I don’t know if it was because I was watching it with my 93-year-old mum but I was almost blushing at some of the moves! Ha, it is one of my favourite movies though and I’m happy to report that it is also one of my mums’ favourites too! 5 I discovered these delicious maple flavoured cashews and I can’t stop eating them. I used them for my Christmas cheeseboard and since then I have been buying them on repeat, So good!! 6 I bought my diary, planner and a few other cute stationery supplies from kikki.K. They had a lot of their items on sale just after Christmas so I was really excited to pick up a few things. Every year I start off strong when it comes to meal planning and writing all my appointments etc in my diary. Then I kind of go off track a bit. Last year I was pretty consistent until we got locked down and then nothing much was happening for me to write down. Hopefully this year things will remain relatively normal. I just love kikki. K’s designs and I’m excited to have picked up some good bargains online! 7 Look at what my sweet cousin gave me!! My favourite chocolate bars. Ha, I love baby Ruth’s not just for their great name but also because of the yummy nutty chocolate!! These bars are not easily found here in Australia so I was super excited when she gave me these on Christmas Eve. 8 I caught up with my lovely friend for brunch the other day and it was so fun to see her! We chose to go to an outdoor cafe. Unfortunately, once again COVID has got all of us in a panic with this Omicron strain. So we thought it would be a good idea to be in an outdoor cafe rather than one that was indoors. It was such a lovely sunny day and the view was fantastic. The food was pretty good too (except for my friend’s gluten-free bread) and it was so nice to catch up and chat chat chat!! 9 I’ve been busy reorganising the house and once again throwing out and donating so much stuff!! I can’t believe how things can accumulate so fast. I am consistently decluttering but I still had a whole lot of things that I no longer needed so I have been getting rid of it all and it feels great!! 10 I have also gotten rid of some dated furniture and sold my entry hallway table on Facebook marketplace. It was also a relief to say goodbye to my old country style bookcase. I picked up this small shelving unit from Ikea and this big round mirror. I think the Ikea shelving unit suits better because it looks lighter than the old clunky bookcase. With the house

Amazon Prime Video Shows I Am Watching

To Prime Or Not To Prime (This post contains NO affiliate links) A couple of months ago my seventeen-year-old son finally convinced me to sign up for Amazon Prime. With Christmas coming up it meant that I would be able to get free delivery on a huge range of products. In addition, with an Amazon Prime subscription, we would also have access to Amazon Prime Video. I have to admit that at first, I wasn’t overly keen because we already have Netflix as well as Stan. And we don’t always have enough hours in the day to watch much of either of those. BUT when I compared prices I discovered that Amazon Prime Video was so much cheaper than the other streaming services I’m already paying for anyway plus the free delivery option was just way too good an offer to pass up especially as it was so close to Christmas. So I chose to go for the annual $59.00 a year option. I could have also picked the $6.99 per month option if I had wanted to. Those are the current prices in Australia at the moment. What I Like About Amazon Prime Well needless to say I am so glad that I did subscribe. I bought many presents for my family and I didn’t have to pay any delivery fee. Plus I also like the variety of shows Amazon Prime Video has to offer. It has original shows as well as some really cool retro shows!! And in my opinion, this really makes it different compared to say Netflix and Stan. Shows I Really Enjoyed Being The Ricardos I read so many reviews on this film which is about a week in the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Many of them were so negative that I almost gave it a miss. The reviews heavily criticised the film because the two lead actors didn’t look very much like the real Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Ignore The Bad Reviews A couple of reviews even went on to say how bad the film was mainly due to the fact that Nicole Kidman wasn’t funny or given the opportunity to be funny. Finally, I read about how Lucie Arnaz, the famous daughter of Lucille Ball, and Desi Arnaz thought the film was brilliant. I thought that if she gave it her approval then that beat all the other bad reviews. Amazing Actors Well, Lucie Arnaz was most definitely right. It was brilliant and the two lead actors Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem were brilliant!! I grew up watching “I Love Lucy” on TV. It was one of my favourite shows to watch with my mum after school.  And watching Nicole Kidman play Lucille Ball was truly spectacular. No, she didn’t look a whole lot like Lucille Ball apart from her hair. But her voice and mannerisms were one hundred percent spot on! I agree that Nicole Kidman wasn’t really funny but the reason was that she wasn’t meant to be funny. This movie was about Lucille Balls’ brilliant mind as a truly gifted comedienne. Being The Ricardos gives us a peek into how thoughtful and meticulous Ball was in regards to every single tiny detail of every episode of “I Love Lucy”. So this show that I grew up watching and truly enjoying was much more complex than I could have ever imagined. Every funny line, gag, and silly movement as well as facial expression was considered and choreographed until it was perfect. The result is that “I Love Lucy” is a truly funny and timeless half hour of pure comedy genius. It was so forward-thinking and changed many things about comedy television that we take for granted today. I really recommend “Being The Ricardos”. I think that it gives such a fantastic insight into the truly amazing talent and minds of a couple of comic geniuses. You won’t be disappointed! Modern Love I had been looking for a series to watch and I found one in “Modern Love”. At first, I wasn’t sure so I did what I usually do. I gave it the 5-10 minute test. If a show doesn’t grab me in that amount of time then I will move on and find something else to watch. It’s actually a good way to test a show because for me it saves a lot of time and disappointment. Well, “Modern Love” grabbed me in the first minute and it hasn’t let me go! It is based on the New York Times weekly column also called Modern Love. Different love stories are adapted into half-hour episodes and you will find some big-name actors in every episode of “Modern Love”. The first season featured Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Ed Sheeran, and Dave Patel. The second series has Minnie Driver, Kit Harrington, and Anna Paquin. Who doesn’t love a good dose of romance? I know I do!! and “Modern Love” gives me the romance fix I crave every single time! Definitely a series worth watching. Shows I Didn’t Enjoy Little Fires Everywhere The first few minutes of this show were interesting and dramatic enough that it straight away had me intrigued. The eight-part series starring Reece Witherspoon and Kerry Washington was indeed very intense. It follows the seemingly perfect life of the Richardson family and how they become tangled up with a mother and daughter who come to live in their town. There were so many layers to every character and overall it was full of twists and turns. After every hour-long episode, there were just so many unanswered questions! So I ended up binge-watching the whole season over two nights. But I have to say that I didn’t really like this show very much at all. I had read many reviews claiming how great it was and when it was first released it was extremely popular. The reason why I watched it so quickly was because I wanted to find out how it ended. I was really impatient with

How to prepare your child for preschool

How To Prepare Your Child For Preschool

Starting preschool is an exciting new adventure for both you and your child and it marks the next step in your child’s development. Here are a few tips and strategies for how to prepare your child for preschool so that it will be a seamless transition as well as a positive experience for both of you. How To Prepare Your Child For Preschool 1. Talk About Preschool A great way to begin is by getting your child used to the idea of going to preschool. You can do this by having positive conversations and talking about all the fun activities they will be doing. If you can why not walk or take a drive past the preschool about two or three weeks before your child is due to start. That way they will be able to get a clear picture of what the preschool building actually looks like. It’s easier to talk to your child about preschool when they have at least some idea of what it looks like. Of course, if your child is not interested in talking about preschool then it’s best not to push the subject. Try and keep any conversations about preschool short and casual. The last thing you want to do is make your child anxious by making it into a big deal. 2. Prepare Your Child By Visiting Preschool Preschools usually offer orientation days or visits. These are a great way to prepare your child for preschool. Children can spend some time meeting the educators and experiencing some of the activities. Unfortunately due to COVID, this might not be currently possible. Some preschools do however send home orientation packs. Inside these packs, you will find things like photos of the preschool and the educators. You may also receive information about the preschool routine and maybe some songs your children will be learning. So even if you are unable to visit the preschool you can still use these resources to familiarise your child with what preschool is all about. 3. Read Books About Preschool There are many books all about starting preschool and you can spend time reading them with your child. This is a wonderful opportunity to answer any questions that may come up. Books will show them positive experiences about going to preschool and give them some idea of what their day may look like. Here is a list of some books about starting preschool Maisie Goes To Preschool by Lucy Cousins Spot Goes To School by Eric Hill I’m Ready For Preschool by Jedda Robaard The Night Before Preschool by Natasha King and Amy Wummer The Berenstain Bears Go To School by Stan and Jan Bernstain 4. Practice Some Self Help Skills to Prepare Your Child For Preschool When children have good self-help skills it increases their confidence, reduces any stress or anxiety, and very importantly it boosts their self-esteem. So it is essential to give your child plenty of opportunities to practice their self-help skills so they may be able to manage the following things Putting on their shoes and socks Unzipping their backpack Manage their own toileting Be able to open their lunchboxes, drink bottles and unwrap their sandwiches Of course, the educators are always more than happy to assist your child with all of those things. But practicing self-help skills is important to promote children’s independence. 5. Purchase Preschool Essentials With Your Child Another useful thing to do to prepare your child for preschool is to take them with you when you buy things like backpacks, lunch boxes, and drink bottles. Many lunch boxes are way too difficult for small fingers and this also applies to drink bottles as well. So consider taking the time to make sure you buy the right lunchbox and drink bottle so that your child can open them easily. Their preschool day will be so much happier if they are able to open and close their own things! 6. Label Everything There are so many labelling options from fancy-designed labels to good old permanent markers. Whichever one you choose is fine as long as you remember to write your child’s name on everything they will be bringing to preschool. Things like backpacks, hats, lunch boxes, drink bottles, spare clothes, and sheets and blankets. It’s also a good idea to show your child where their name is. It will make them familiar with their name as well as avoid confusion in case there is another child at preschool who owns the same or similar item. 7. Have A Good Bedtime Schedule Another important way to prepare your child for preschool is by making sure they are well-rested. Those first few weeks of preschool can be so exhausting for them so it is essential that they have a good bedtime routine so they get sufficient sleep. You really want to avoid a tired cranky child who will find it a struggle to get through the day. How To Prepare Your Child For The First Day Of Preschool Try and make sure you and your child wake up early enough so that the morning isn’t a stressful rush. Prepare your child some breakfast and encourage them to eat. Sometimes nerves may get in the way of appetite but try and make sure they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy breakfast. Pack a simple lunch your child is familiar with and keep the choice of food to a minimum. Young children will become very easily stressed if they are faced with too many choices. Pack your child’s backpack together so they know exactly what they are taking to preschool and they know where their things are inside their backpack. Saying Good-Bye Stay For A Short Period Of Time On the first day, you may want to stay for a little while. Try and make sure it is no longer than 10 to 15 minutes. Perhaps you could do one activity with your child and then say goodbye. Ask the educators to support your child if you see that

A New Year Of Blogging

Hi everyone and welcome back to a new year of blogging! Wow, feels like I’ve been away for ages. Hope you are all well and were able to enjoy the Christmas and New Year festivities. The week leading up to Christmas just felt like a whirlwind!! Now we are into January everything has sort of come to a stop and I’m really grateful to be off work right up until the very end of January. I’ve been binge-watching a lot of shows and staying up super late. My two favourite things to do!! Quick Christmas Re-Cap Christmas feels like a lifetime ago now! This year I hosted Christmas at my place and I had to make sure I was super organised because my usual right-hand man had to work that night. Oh yes, I should mention that in keeping with our South American tradition, we celebrate on Christmas Eve. Our house is very small but I did everything possible to accommodate our fifteen family members and thankfully everyone was comfortable and really had a lot of fun just enjoying the evening laughing so hard and eating way too much food! But if you’re like me and have a small house, you might find some useful tips for entertaining in a small space here. Here are a few pics from Christmas Eve Summer Is Definitely Here! It has been so incredibly hot and humid here in Sydney for the last two weeks. But I’m not complaining because I love Summer! I don’t feel the heat as much as the rest of my family do (they’re not fans of Summer). A long time ago a friend of mine nicknamed me Sahara, ha! she couldn’t understand how come everyone else was a sweaty mess and I seemed to be fine in the heat! De-Cluttering Again It never ceases to amaze me how clutter just happens! I don’t hoard and I am consistently cleaning and tidying up, yet I still had to take a whole day and do some serious de-cluttering. My son was away for four days after Christmas. He went with his best friend and his family on a beach holiday. So I took the opportunity to tackle his room first. He had so many clothes that didn’t fit him anymore plus bags and bags of junk!! Usually, Sam is pretty good about keeping his room sort of tidy but he has a big built-in wardrobe and this is where all this “stuff” had accumulated. I took down all the Christmas decorations on Boxing day and as much as I love Christmas, for me once it’s over it’s over. All I want to see is my house back to normal. A New Year Of Blogging January will be my eighth month of blogging! I am really enjoying it and towards the end of the year, I felt like I was finally getting into the rhythm of things. But, I did find that with working full time and trying to stay on top of all the things, getting a post out every day was a big challenge. For this year I’m thinking that a realistic goal for me would probably be posting three days a week. So I’m aiming to post every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Like I mentioned before I’m off for nearly the whole of January so I might be blogging more. But when preschool goes back I will definitely be back here at least three days a week. I’m hoping to keep posting about everyday life, self-care, Early Childhood Education topics, recipes, and tips on cleaning and home organisation. I do hope you will join me in 2022!
