How to Unwind During the Holidays

Hi friends, and welcome to the final Let’s Look link-up for 2024! Can you believe it’s the last one? Today, we’re chatting about how to unwind during the holidays. Unwinding can be tricky for me this time of year, with all the end-of-year prep at preschool and the usual busyness of the season. Here in Australia, I’m lucky to enjoy a long summer break after Christmas, and that’s when I can finally get into some proper unwinding. In the meantime, I’ve got a few tips to help make it through the manic holiday season. These tips help me cross the finish line, and I hope you’ll find them helpful, too. How To Unwind During The Holidays Do Nothing I really struggle with this one! But lately, I’ve been learning to give myself permission to do nothing. Just yesterday, after the first of our preschool concert and party days, I came home feeling so incredibly tired. Those out-of-routine days really wipe me out. I was all set to get stuck into a big reorganisation project that’s been sitting on my to-do list. Normally, I’d push through and get it done, but instead, I decided to give myself a break. I even stood in front of the mirror and said out loud, “You have permission to do nothing.” (haha, thankfully, no one else was home to see me talking to myself!) I had a shower and tidied up a few things–baby steps because I’m not quite ready to fully embrace doing absolutely nothing. The guilt did creep in a few times, which is crazy because the only one putting pressure on me to stay busy is me. But I have to say that doing nothing felt so good! So it’s my mission that as I go into 2025, I will do this whole a lot more often. Pamper Yourself I think that one of the best ways to unwind is to have a pamper session. It doesn’t have to be a full-on spa day. Sometimes, just a relaxing shower is all the pampering I have time for during the busy holiday season. But other times, I love to do things like use a hydrating sheet mask, which means I get to lie down for 20 minutes while the mask does its magic. I also love a manicure or pedicure either at home or a salon. I guess at the end of the day, it’s all about finding what works and making time for a little self-care whenever I can. Watch A Movie or TV Show When I want to unwind, I like to pick an old favourite movie or TV show that I know is a guaranteed win. I find it more relaxing knowing that I am going to enjoy my time in front of the TV, and if I doze off, it’s ok too. Light A Candle I love gentle, subtle-smelling candles that waft through the house. Cozy candles are wonderful during the cold months. but I still light them during the summer because their soft glow and soothing scents create a calm and peaceful atmosphere no matter the season. Enjoy a Treat The holidays are all about indulging a little (it’s a good excuse anyway). I love sitting down with a cup of tea and a piece of something sweet, like a festive biscuit or chocolate. A glass of wine is also a winner, and lately, the hot weather has me craving an Aperol Spritz! Walk I find walking the perfect way to unwind during the whole year. Sometimes, I listen to a podcast while I walk other times, I listen to music. Yep, walking is a wonderful way to unwind, and if you’re feeling extra stressed, just walk faster–it really helps! Stretch The right side of my neck is my stress indicator. Once that starts to ache, soon the whole right side of my body starts to hurt if I don’t do some stretching on the yoga mat. I don’t follow any stretching guides (although I probably should). I just stretch like a cat until the pain goes away. These are the tips I use to help me unwind all year long, as well as during the busy holiday season. Thanks so much for stopping by, and I hope you have an amazing day. Linking up with Shay and Erika

How to Find More Free Time in Your Life

No matter how packed your schedule may seem or how compelled you feel to be constantly busy, there’s always a way to carve out some free time for yourself. And you know what? You absolutely deserve it – time to unwind, recharge, and enjoy yourself. So, here are some tips on how to find that crucial free time in your life: How To Find More Free Time In Your Life Unlocking Efficiency: Your Digital Assistant To start, let technology work for you rather than against you. While it’s easy to get lost in endless scrolling on social media, the right apps can actually help you reclaim some of that lost time. Utilise apps to streamline everyday tasks such as bill payments, grocery orders, or even scheduling social media posts. For businesses, consider employing online hospitality training or virtual assistant services to delegate tasks that would otherwise consume your time. It’s akin to having a personal assistant who won’t spread rumours about you at the water cooler! The Art of Saying “No” Mastering the art of saying “no” is like discovering a hidden treasure within yourself. When faced with yet another request, harness your inner strength and graciously decline. You don’t have to be everything to everyone. Remember, each time you say “yes” to something you’re not passionate about, you’re essentially saying “no” to the opportunity to find free time in your life. So, prioritise wisely and make room for those moments of relaxation and joy that truly matter to you. Embrace Marie Kondo’s Method Get ready to declutter like a pro with Marie Kondo’s timeless wisdom! If it hasn’t been used, worn, or even crossed your mind in the past year, chances are, it’s not sparking joy. Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up your space; it’s about clearing your mind too. With fewer items to sift through, you’ll spend less time hunting down what you actually need. And the best part? Less stuff means less cleaning—talk about a double win! The Power of Batching Discover the power of batching! It’s like creating your own productivity assembly line. By bundling similar tasks together and tackling them in focused bursts, you’ll streamline your life with efficiency. Allocate dedicated slots for activities like email checking, errand running, or phone calls. This way, you’ll avoid the constant back-and-forth, saving both mental energy and precious time to find more free time in your life for what truly matters. Smart Outsourcing Outsourcing isn’t just for big businesses—it’s a game-changer for anyone ready to find and reclaim more free time in life with a smile! Instead of juggling chores like cleaning or meal prep, why not hand them over to the pros? With more free time in your life, you can dive into the things that truly light you up, whether it’s a playful game of hide-and-seek with your kids or a laughter-filled wine night with friends. It’s a smart move that leaves you with more moments of joy and less stress. Embrace “Good Enough” Let’s face it: perfectionism is the ultimate time thief. Sometimes, settling for ‘good enough’ is more than okay—it’s liberating! Not every meal needs to rival a five-star restaurant, and not every email needs to read like a literary masterpiece. So, why not give yourself permission to lower the bar every now and then? Your schedule will thank you, and you’ll discover newfound moments of free time in life to savour and enjoy. Find Your Quiet Hours Uncover your power hours and make them sacred! Whether it’s the tranquil dawn before the hustle begins or the serene night when the world settles, these moments are pure gold. Dive into tasks that demand your full attention and watch your productivity soar. Utilise them for tasks demanding your utmost focus, and witness how swiftly you can conquer your to-do list. Conclusion: Reclaim Your Time and Enjoy Life Reclaiming your time is within your grasp, no matter how hectic life may seem. You deserve those moments to unwind, recharge, and enjoy life. So, armed with the tips, embark on a journey to find more free time in your life. Whether it’s harnessing technology, mastering the art of saying “no,” or embracing simplicity, each step brings you closer to a life filled with joy and relaxation. So go ahead, seize the day, your well-being is worth it!

embracing good posture

Embracing Good Posture

Hi everyone, welcome to Wellness Wednesday! I thought we could chat today about good posture and standing tall to feel great (or at least feel better in my case). This week, I had a major wake-up call about the impact of bad posture and realised the importance of embracing good posture right away! Embracing Good Posture As a teenager, my mum would often correct my posture with a light whack across my shoulders. It never hurt but it would certainly startle me into standing tall! Even today, whenever I straighten up, I can still hear her voice in my head saying “Straighten your back!” (except she said it in Spanish. It’s amazing how effective it sounds in Spanish!) I think that spending way too much time in front of the computer. As well as sitting on a non-ergonomic chair is what has messed up my neck lately.  It got so bad that I could hear my neck joints crunching every time I moved after spending hours in a slouched position with my big head jutting out from my body. Ewwww! Then of course I started to get headaches and the pain started to travel down to my shoulder blades. Sigh. Motivated by Pain: Taking Action on Posture There’s nothing like pain to motivate you to change a bad habit is there? So for the past couple of days, I have been really focused on keeping my shoulders back and my head aligned with my spine, held up high and parallel to the ground. I did some Googling and was so happy to find tips on relieving neck pain. Instead of the usual list of potentially scary health warnings. You know the ones that Dr Google loves to give, right? Tips to Remember: Making Good Posture Stick I know it kind of sounds obvious- good posture means standing up straight (just like my mum said) and aligning your body (just like Google said). But once the pain goes away I tend to forget and go back to my slouchy ways!! So I found some good tips to remember how to stand tall and make it a habit that sticks. Set some reminders throughout the day to check in with your posture. Invest in ergonomic furniture, like a supportive chair and adjustable desk. Stretch and strengthening exercises! Since I have been making a conscious effort to stand tall, straight and aligned. I’ve noticed some positive changes. I have started to feel better and thankfully, that annoying neck crunch has quietened down. I have to admit that standing straight still doesn’t feel entirely natural yet. But by doing some simple stretches and focusing on my posture, I can feel my body slowly getting used to feeling less like a stiff robot and becoming more at ease in its new, healthier alignment. Now if I could just remember to stop clenching my jaw!! Related Articles Lower Back Pain Solutions

How To Build Family Resilience During Tough Times

Image Credit Facing difficult times as a family is a natural part of life’s journey, yet it’s how you navigate these moments together that truly defines your bond and builds resilience during tough times. While some families emerge from adversity with unwavering strength and unity others may falter. Naturally, you aspire for your family to belong to the former category. Whether grappling with financial strain, coping with the loss of a loved one, or experiencing conflict in the family, understanding how to rally together, endure, and heal collectively is crucial for learning how to build resilience. The following tips can help your family remain resilient when going through tough times.   How To Build Family Resilience During Tough Times Unite Around A Shared Belief Or Value Having family beliefs does not necessarily have to be about religion or spirituality. Sometimes, it’s about having a set of values or a vision you share as a family. These can guide how you approach hard times and determine the meaning of each difficult experience. These values provide a bigger picture to consider instead of just focusing on the problems. They can help you put your tough times into a proper perspective and motivate you to deal with or overcome the challenges of any traumatic event. Additionally, a family belief system cultivates unity, ensuring that everyone feels included and supported. Discover Effective Ways To Alleviate Stress In tough times, stress can weigh heavily on families no matter how united they are. It’s essential to alleviate this stress to protect everyone’s mental well-being. Two key strategies are vital: Firstly, address responsibilities together rather than individually, regardless of their size. This nurtures unity and prevents anyone from feeling isolated. Share tasks such as caregiving, financial planning, and household chores to reinforce your bond. Secondly, prioritize quality family time for relaxation and bonding. Yes, times are hard, but spending quality family time together will make the situation a lot more bearable.  Support Each Other To Recover Having the support of family makes navigating hard moments less challenging. On the contrary, allowing each member to recover independently can prolong the healing process and even lead to the family drifting apart. Therefore, it’s crucial to support each other during difficult periods. For instance, when dealing with the loss of a family member, face the stages of grief together as a unified front. Comfort each other through the tears and ensure that no one is left to grieve alone. Additionally, collaborate as a family to manage every aspect of dealing with the loss, from arranging meetings with a funeral director to bidding the final farewell. Don’t Hesitate To Seek Professional Counselling When Necessary In times of stress, pain, and hardship, professional assistance in the form of counselling can be very beneficial, especially when it comes to building resilience as a family. Family counsellors, therapists, and various support groups can offer invaluable insight into how best to handle any trying situation. Their presence, advice, care, and support can also offer something solid to lean on, helping you feel like you’re not alone in the struggle. Contrary to what some think, reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness. Instead, it’s a testament to your commitment to your family’s well-being, showing that you prioritize their needs during challenging times. In Conclusion In the journey of family life, tough times are inevitable, yet they offer opportunities for growth and resilience. While adversity may shake us, it’s our collective response that defines us. Strive for your family to emerge stronger, united and more resilient. This guide on how to build resilience offers valuable strategies for navigating challenges together, from embracing shared values to seeking professional support when needed. Remember, you’re not facing these struggles alone. Together, you can overcome any obstacle and emerge even stronger on the other side.

simple ways to strengthen family relationships post

Simple Ways To Strengthen Family Relationships

Image Credit Family bonding is beneficial in many ways and is even more vital as the world gets more fast-paced. However, it’s quite easy to overlook this activity, especially when juggling school, work, and personal issues. It is, therefore, essential to be intentional about making time for your family, as family bonding can improve various aspects of daily life. This is backed by recent research, which shows that doing so can boost resilience, impact well-being, and influence how people respond to challenges. With some effort and commitment, the four tips below can help you grow and strengthen your family relationships.  Simple Ways To Strengthen Family Relationships 1. Prioritise Personal Time No matter how close-knit your family is, everyone needs to have a bit of space for themselves. That’s because it’s easy to get overwhelmed by combining family, work, and personal life. Therefore, it’s best to make time for individual self-care to help ensure everyone’s mental well-being. This way, you can all give your best when you spend time with one another. So, whether it’s sneaking off for a solo surf session, booking a date night with your partner, or allowing the kids some time to spend with their toys, it’s all about finding what works for your family.  2. Plan Quality Time Strengthening family relationships involves more than simply spending time together; it’s about engaging in meaningful activities during that time. Rather than simply lounging around together, planning hobbies and activities that involve the entire family can be more rewarding. There are numerous enjoyable bonding opportunities tailored to your family’s interests. Whether it’s a beach outing, a hiking adventure, or an indoor game night, there are plenty of options to explore. If you’re seeking more ideas, consider exciting options like Hidden Door Experiences, which offer thrilling activities the whole family will love. 3. Disconnect From Technology Smart devices such as phones, tablets, and laptops have taken over many people’s lives faster than expected, with a recent survey showing that the average Australian spends over 5 hours daily on their phone. When left unchecked, these gadgets can dictate the pace for the whole family. That’s why it’s essential to hit the pause button occasionally and encourage everyone to disconnect from their devices. By taking a break together, you can enjoy good old-fashioned quality time—chatting, laughing, and strengthening your bonds without any distractions. Consider implementing a house rule to unplug and tune into each other instead. 4. Create A Supportive Environment Family isn’t just about the good times; it’s also about supporting each other through the tough times. One excellent way to strengthen your family bonds is by being there to offer support when things get difficult. Knowing that you have someone to lean on can make a huge difference on a bad day. You may find it remarkable how many individuals depend on you during difficult moments, highlighting how valuable your presence is. Whether it’s offering a comforting word to a sibling in distress or being a supportive listener for a parent going through a rough patch, your role within the family becomes indispensable during challenging times. By lending a helping hand, you’re building a foundation of trust that will last a lifetime. So, stick together through thick and thin, and you’ll see your family ties grow stronger than ever. In Conclusion Prioritizing family time is essential in today’s bustling world. Research highlights its incredible benefits: boosting resilience, enhancing well-being, and strengthening family bonds. By prioritizing personal time, planning quality activities, disconnecting from technology, and fostering a supportive environment, you’re laying the foundation for a thriving family dynamic. Embrace these practices with enthusiasm, and watch your family relationships flourish amidst life’s adventures!

Invest In Learning And Education Investing in learning and education is like giving yourself a confidence boost on demand! Learning a new skill will give you an immediate rush of confidence! Delving into a new skill isn’t just about acquiring knowledge—it’s about igniting a sense of excitement and empowerment within yourself. Plus, lifelong learning isn’t just good for your brain; it’s a powerful tool for maintaining mental sharpness and well-being. Stop Comparing Yourself To Others! Last but not least stop comparing yourself to others! We’ve all been there, caught up in envy from time to time. But here’s the thing: constantly measuring yourself against others can drain your energy and hold you back from reaching your full potential. Instead, be your own biggest supporter and cheer on every little success. Whether it’s finishing a work task or just getting through a tough day, each win counts. Focus on your journey, embrace your strengths, and watch your confidence grow. Stop comparing yourself to others and start showing yourself some kindness. Celebrate those small victories—they’re the key to feeling more confident! In Conclusion Investing in being confident in the workplace is crucial. By embracing personal strengths, celebrating victories, and avoiding comparisons, individuals create an environment where being confident in the workplace is not just encouraged but celebrated!

how to keep your teeth and gums healthy post

How To Keep Your Teeth And Gums Healthy

What do you think about your teeth? Maybe you don’t really pay them much attention at all, or perhaps you’re not entirely happy with how straight (or not!) they are. The thought of losing them may have crossed your mind – it’s a common concern and, let’s face it, we’ve all had nightmares like that! The good news is that whatever you think about your teeth, maintaining healthy teeth and gums doesn’t have to be a cause for concern. By adopting a few simple habits, you can keep your teeth strong and healthy for many years to come. Read on to find out more. How To Keep Your Teeth And Gums Healthy Visit Your Dentist Dentists can have something of a bad reputation for being a place of pain and discomfort, but the fact is, most of the time, your trip to the dentist isn’t going to hurt at all – it will be quick and painless and over before you know it.  That’s usually the case if you visit your dentist on a regular basis because your teeth will remain in good condition. Regular check-ups help catch any issues early, allowing you to address them and get things fixed before they become painful problems. Plus, visiting your dentist means you’ll get all the right information about taking care of your teeth between visits, helping you stay healthy and happy.  Brush Twice A Day Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is as simple as brushing twice a day a day. Make it a routine – brush before bed and first thing in the morning (or after you’ve had your coffee or orange juice if you prefer – toothpaste can make these drinks taste bad!) and you’re done. Of course, you do need to invest in a good toothbrush, and ideally, you should floss at the same time. But even if you only brush your teeth, that’s a fantastic way to keep them strong and healthy. If you do want to brush your teeth more than twice a day (after lunch or after eating or drinking something sugary, for example), that’s not a problem, but make sure you do it gently to prevent damage.  Replace Your Toothbrush Speaking of brushing your teeth, here’s a question that you might find difficult to answer: how long have you had your toothbrush? If you can’t even remember when you bought it, you’ve probably had it for too long, and it’s time to replace it with a new one, (a soft-bristled one is best). Toothbrushes don’t last forever, and it’s best to replace yours every three to four months. Not only is that more hygienic, but it ensures that your teeth cleaning is more effective because the bristles will be in good condition. If you have an electric toothbrush, you should be able to replace the head alone rather than having to buy an entirely new toothbrush that will cost a decent amount, but it’s best to check that before you make the initial investment, otherwise you might find you have to spend more than you budgeted for. In conclusion, your teeth deserve a bit more love and attention than you might have realised. Whether you’ve been neglecting them or dreaming of a perfect smile, the good news is that maintaining healthy teeth and gums is simpler than you imagine. Regular visits to your friendly dentist, brushing twice a day, and replacing your toothbrush regularly can effortlessly become habits. These habits keep your teeth strong and vibrant. So, let’s make a pledge to give those pearly whites the care they deserve, ensuring many years of bright and happy smiles ahead!

From your doctor to your dentist to your therapist to your optometrist, these professionals are there to ensure you get what you need in terms of advice and, if needed, in terms of treatment too. So that’s why one of your resolutions should be to make regular appointments with these professionals and stick to them.  You might not think that’s really necessary if you feel fairly healthy and don’t think there’s anything really wrong, but that’s the point – waiting to see these healthcare providers when something is definitely wrong means you miss out on the preventative care they can offer. If you see a general dental expert every six months, for example, you might prevent gum disease. If you see an optician once a year, you can get glasses to prevent worsening eyesight. And if you see a doctor regularly, they’ll spot any issues before they become more difficult to treat.  Exercise More Regular exercise is another crucial element in keeping your health in the best condition, and if you don’t currently do much exercise, increasing the amount you do is a great resolution to make. Even walking somewhere instead of driving is a good start – anything that gets you moving more than you do now is a positive thing to do.  Although it can be hard to get motivated when it comes to doing more exercise, especially if you’re not really into playing sports or going to the gym, it’s one of the core processes that will help you stay healthy and maybe even live longer too. The good news is there are many ways to get exercise so you should be able to find something that suits you, from running to swimming to dancing and much, much more.  De-Stress  When you think about your health, it’s probably your physical health that comes to mind first, and that makes sense – if you have pain or something isn’t working in the way it should, you’re going to notice it. However, what about your mental health? It’s just as important, even if it’s more difficult to spot when there’s an issue – at first, anyway.  That’s why another great resolution is to try to de-stress and relax as much as possible. Take some time for yourself every day – even if it’s just 10 minutes – for deep breathing exercises, meditation, and so on. You can take a soak in a bath, read a book, go for a walk, and so much more – make a conscious effort to de-stress, and you’ll be amazed at how great you feel.
